Any suggestions on a CHEAP but decent Ipod ready stereo, with cheap or free installation? And I cannot do it myself.

i like alpine myself. i think a new low end one will run about 150.

install is super easy. no reason you shouldn't be able to do it yourself

If you are hesitant about doing it yourself, order through Crutchfield... I got a stereo there a couple of years ago, and you get step by step instructions and the right wiring harness specifically for your car & stereo. A monkey could have done it... well, a monkey that could read...

not sure if best buy still does it, but it used to be if you bought a stereo over a certain price, the installation was free.

lots of the new ones have a "line in jack"
you just get a male at both end "headphone jack" and plug from Ipod to CD Deck

ya... there are different types of "ipod ready" stereos... ones with the aux input are becoming just about common place, and can be very cheap. All it does is play the sound of of your ipod (or really anything else) through your stereo. You have to use the ipod to skip tracks or play other songs, etc.

True ipod ready stereos have a dock or cable to plug in your ipod where you can control the ipod through the stereo... these are a little more costly.

    .

i did the crutchfield thing as well. it came with the wiring harness as well the dash kit. for my truck, it was two 10mm bolts and wires to hook up.

one of the nice things about a true ipod ready (connected via a cable) is that it will charge the ipod while you drive around.

ah yeah... good point... otherwise you gotta use a car charger and a cord to the aux in... my wife's car is like that and it seems like she has cords everywhere lol.

I was actually checking out Crutchfield's site earlier today, the thing that worries me is that my car (2001 Subaru Legacy) already has an aftermarket stereo hooked up. So I'm worried that 1) the wiring harness will trip me up, and 2) the stereo won't fit properly, since I'm not working with the original equipment to do research with. If any of that made sense?!

half the work is done for you. you just need to pull the old stereo out, change half the harness (assuming they didn't butcher the factory harness) and then slide in the new stereo. you'll get two wire harness pieces. one that plugs into the back of the stereo and one that plugs into the factory harness. stereo wires are pretty univeral in color coding. gray goes to gray. gray with stripe goes to gray with stripe. it's really that easy.

not sure... you probably will just have to take out the old wiring harness, and put the new one in. Who knows if whoever put the current stereo in did any sort of modifications to get it to fit right though...

maybe even call crutchfield with the brand/model of your current stereo, maybe a newer model of the same brand will fit right in and use the same wiring harness and everything?

it makes it so nice. i have one wire running under the dash to my center console. ipod is always charged and ready to go. the gf on the other hand brings hers in every friday to charge. i guess it's not a big deal in the big picture, but it's a nice feature.

Thanks for all of the help and replies. I think I'm going to see what a new one at Best Buy would be, including installation. And then call Crutchfield and see if any of the new ones would just plug right into the current wiring harness(that is a great idea blackredyellow). Then pick the cheaper of the two, which will likely be Crutchfield. Thanks again!

if you get bored later, take a picture of the stereo as it stands today. you should also be able to pull the old stereo out and take a picture of the harness. key would be the car's harness.

to pull most stereo's, you just need to slide a small flat piece of metal down each side of the stereo to release the clips, then it should pull straight out.

anouther nice thing about crutchfield is the lack of sales tax. their customer service is also top notch. good luck

I've used this website for two installs...
    http://www.installdr.com/

They show you step by step instructions as well as provide car specific wire guides in case you don't have a connector.

Once you have all the hardware, if you follow that site...it shouldn't take you more than 20 mins to do.

Got a Pioneer that's good enough from Walmart. Has a 1/8" jack right on the front.
    Around $70.

I just recently replaced the stock receiver with the Sony GT540UI with the speakers package from Crutchfield for $150.00... installed in a snap. The Sony unit is great with the iPod... but the controls from the unit take some getting used to. It allows for controls from the iPod, too.
    Replaced all 4 speakers, too.
    No complaints.

I wound up just ordering a PAC Ipod adaptor for my stereo yesterday from Crutchfield. It connects directly to the back of the head unit. Only downside is that you can only use the Ipod to control the songs played, not the head unit. Still, not bad, it's cheaper and should be easier than installing a new stereo.

should work out good. while the alpine controls are similiar to the ipod, the ipod still scrolls thru stuff a lot faster. but it is easier to drive and use the head unit vs. using the ipod.

Yeah, I think I may be using the shuffle option quite a bit.
