So i know you shouldn't just do something on earth day you should form habits that are long lasting to have a real effect, but I was just wondering if anyone was doing anything special today?

helping out with any groups or planning to turn their power off for a few hours etc?

I don't have anything planned but I feel I should do something. So maybe you guys can share and I'll get motivated to get greener

  • We already do a few things:

    Reuse, reduce, recycle

    Do not own a car

Use energy efficient light bulbs throughout our home

Only boil as much water as needed

Do not run tap constantly while brushing teeth

Try to eat locally sourced food as much as possible.

Do not leave electrical appliances on stand by

Turn lights off when not in the room

Well, just to mention a few of the basics! Today, I plan to go out for a walk in the sunshine and remind myself why it is important to do our bit to protect the Earth!

Taking a shit naked outside in the grass.
  • I did some clearing out recently and found a notebook with the following poem inside. I think I must have written it back in 2000 and it just seems so apt for this thread and so I hope you do not mind me sharing it with you all.

    I'd Like To But....

    Today, a tree died.
    It's body cut in two,
And its roots torn from the ground.
Now a gaseous serpent winds its way.

(The car in front moves so slow.
If there were more lanes, I would be able to go.)

    Today, a child died,
    Malnourished and starved,
In the arms of its Mother.
    Where corn once stood,
    Now there are graves.

(Not fish-fingers again. I had those last week!
It's always the same. I'm starving!)

    Today, a man died.
    His palms and soles beaten.
    His throat cut.
In the darkness a candle went out.

    (Foreign holidays! They are always the same;
    No swimming pool!
    No air conditioning!
We won't be coming here again).

    Today, the World died;
Her hair pulled from its roots.
    Her body beaten and raped.
Toxins found, where once life blood flowed.

    Despite her injuries-
    The horrors she knows.
Her tears are not of pain,
    But of frustration.
As she listens to all her violators cry...

...Help? Of course, I would like to but...

  • I put together an Earth Day Folk Music Festival at Oklahoma State University with Oklahoma folk artists. The theme is "This Land is Your Land" in honor of Woody Guthrie. If anyone is in Oklahoma come and check it out. It's in Stillwater and is on campus. The festival is held between Willard and Theta Pond on the corner of Monroe and University. The festival is free and starts at 4pm and ends at 12am. Prior to the music there is an Earth Day festival behind held from 10:00am-4:00pm. Free food, lots of people standing up and making people aware of what they can do to make Oklahoma a more environmentally minded place.
    Festival line up:
    4pm Fifth Story

    5pm Andrew Arterberry http://www.myspace.com/arterberry

    6pm Steelwind

    7pm Penny HIll http://www.myspace.com/pennyhillplays

    8pm Satori http://www.myspace.com/aaronhaleandsatori

    9pm Sherree Chamberlain http://www.myspace.com/sherreechamberlain

I'm getting Saturn to write Earth a birthday card... Venus is providing the cake.
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

I'm feeling a little depressed knowing that nothing we as humans are willing to do will make much of a difference in the long run. We're all so fucked. Oh well, I don't have kids. Enjoy the future everyone! If you ever wind up in my neck of the woods looking for a fresh water source after 99% of the world's water is toxic, just know, I will shoot and eat you... and your kids.

    Happy Earth Day!

nah, Uranus was busy... so I've employed Halle Berry to do a Black Hole instead.

  • More people in the UK seem to be saying "No Thanks" to plastic carrier bags in supermarkets and shops. Although this seemed to aggravate one of the shop assistants in my local WHSmiths; she offered me a carrier bag and I said "No Thanks" and she said "That seems to be what everybody in the UK is saying now" and pointed towards all of the carrier bags behind the counter....she seemed really put out :o

I'm doing that. We REALLY need a new refrigerator, ours has been on Death Row for a long time. I was one of the few Texans lucky enough to score an appliance rebate and I just bought a new refrigerator! Hasn't been delivered yet but they will haul off the old one and recycle it.

My prince rides his bike to work every day unless the weather's really bad.

Earth Day seems like a good day to take the advice of that really excellent band from Seattle, Fur Jam:

Bobby Jindal takes a helicopter to church every Sunday. I wish I was joking, but I'm not. A helicopter. To church. And he justifies it by saying church attendance is work related. It's hard to fathom why Louisiana is a punchline... lol

On a more personal note, my wife and I grow our own vegetables, we carpool to work, don't use plastic bags, do use eco-friendly lightbulbs, don't leave the faucet running while we brush our teeth, and we recycle as much of our waste as we can. We do what we can do... it's not much, but it's a start.
And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.
