Little League Baseball

So this is my 10 year old son's first season of Little League. We signed up back in November for a registration fee of $105. Practices got under way about a month ago, twice a week. Since the first practice I have been asked for anywhere from $3 to $35 at EVERY PRACTICE for all kinds of different fee's, necessary items etc.
Not to mention the price for the uniform stuff he needed (which I knew we'd have to purchase) around $80.
I'm starting to get really irritated by this. What did the original $105 registration fee cover? I feel like this is a huge money making business instead of something for the kids to have fun doing. I'm a single mom and I'm giving tons of my time to the team which I'm happy to do but everytime they ask for more money I want to scream. We've already done a candy bar fundraiser so there is more money that was made. What is this fundraiser money covering I'd like to know since I seem to have spent about $350 already and my kid hasn't even played his first game.

Anyone want to chime in on this and open my eyes?

Why don't you ask to see some sort of statement to see where the money is going. Does this money cost for tournaments, rental of the field for practice, equipment, bevrages for the games, etc. Might give you peace of mind.

I don't know why you would need that much for baseball. I know here in Canada our big sport is hockey, now your taking $$$$, I know a fellow who has 3 young boys in hockey, registration is around a 1000 plus equipment and every year you seemingly have to buy something because they've outgrown the old stuff.

Aahhhh---little league!!! So glad I am done with that---I was involved for about least 7-8 years and was on the board for 3 as the Treasurer no less!!! (and then of course pony league and high school!)

That seems like a lot of $$ to be asking for but of course, you do live in expensive Orange County!! ;) and i have been out of it for 7 years

First, is your son's team asking for the $$ or is the league? You can ask your coach what the $$ is for if HE is asking for it. The team itself wants to collect for that all important team party at the end of the year! It does cost a lot for equipment, utilities--water, electricity especially if you have night games (!). The food in the snack bar, if you have one, costs a lot but we made a LOT of money off that. The uniforms are not cheap either but I assume you had to buy your own pants, belt, socks. You have to pay a fee to the little league org. Umps should be free from volunteering but maybe that changed. Oh, and they will have to buy trophies or whatever for EVERYONE at the end because we cannot just give to the top teams!! (don't get me started on that).

Probably more than you wanted to know but that kind of hit home for me.

And again, THANK GOD I AM DONE WITH IT!!!!!!!!! :D:D
So I'll just lie down and wait for the dream

Thanks for the info everyone. I'm sure all the money goes to good use, I was just really starting to get the feeling that too many people were making too much money off of these kids and their families.
Your info was very helpful Lizard. My son is soooo happy today (opening day) I feel bad for being upset with these folks.

i loved little league and don't remember my mom complaining about extra money being spent. as far as i can remember, we had to pay the registration fee and buy cleats (and a glove, of course). everything else was provided by the league (i.e. uniforms). each team had their own party at the end of the season, but the money that was raised for those parties was made by having 50/50 raffles at all the games, and bottle & can drives. i don't remember ever having to sell candy bars for little league. all i remember is: register, show up to practices, show up to games. i loved little league, some of the best times of my youth.

So today was my son's first little league game ever (His first season). I have to say that after todays game, every penny I have put out for this has been worth it! What a great day! His team lost but my son hit a triple on his first at bat (ever). I cried! I couldn't help it. He's just so little and so damn cute! YAY!

    Organized activities are very expensive.

We do Soccer, T-Ball, Skating and swimming and pay a small fortune. I don't know about the US - but in Canada, at least they are all tax deductable.

Most of the money for the registration fee's pays the city workers, renting the park's, and park maintenance.

Umpires and tournament entry fees aren't cheap either.

I loved little league. When I was 13, we lost the first game of the tournament. Then won 9 straight games to will our sectional. It was some of the best baseball I had ever seen played. So to me, it's worth every dime.

anyone see the play by that venezulean short stop yesterday? looked liked omar vizquel going to the other side of 2nd base to snag a grounder and then twisting and turning to gun out a kid at first. one of the finest plays you'll see a little leaguer make....of course he's from latin america
