of replacing the album version of the song in their media player to the demo version? The demo is so so soooo much better, I don't really understand what was going through the guys' heads when they turned it into the album version.

Yeah, I've been thinking about doing that. I really like on the album when "And I'm still holding on.." kicks in. But otherwise, the demo was much better. This is pretty much my only complaint about Backspacer, though. I'm enthralled with it otherwise

I agree. I did the 'replacement' and am glad I did. For whatever reason, I can't learn to like the released version of Speed of Sound... I find it very cheesy, where the demo is gorgeous.

There's something really 80's about it that I actually really, really like. They do some really atypical arrangements on the record that make it have a bit more variety than, say, Avocado. Speed of Sound is a perfect example.

I will say, however, that there's so much going on in the bloody arrangement that at first my ears were a little confused. I'm very used to the demo version.

very much agree with the Confused Ear Syndrome on the SoS album version. I'm thinking headphones will serve it well.

How about making it track 12 and extending the album?

    Doubt it.

and JimmyV, that would probably disturb the flow quite a lot but it was a cool idea.

I liked the demo but I actually like the album version a lot more. The demo was really interesting but sort of strange and difficult to follow. I was impressed with how they were able to almost turn it into a pop song on the album. The drumming sounds fantastic and comes in at just the right time.

I dont even think its close. The album version of SoS is one of the worst songs on the album (only force of nature and johnny guitar are worse). The demo just blew me away. wow. would have been an album highlight. Never would have thought it. **And when I say bad songs I just mean relative to other songs on the album. Any new PJ I am thankful for.

I agree that the demo of Speed of Sound is infinitely better than the album version - it was the biggest disappointment of Backspacer for me. I think the band have wrecked one of ed's most beautiful songs. Matt should have used brushes instead of those big out-of-place thumps, and the guitar riff in the bridges are woeful. But after a few listens I can tolerate it.

But I just can't take Force of Nature. I'd go so far as to say it's the worst song on any PJ album, by quite a distance. I can find absolutely nothing I like about it. for the first time ever, I feel there's a PJ song that I'd be happy never to hear again.

But I totally disagree with you about Johnny Guitar. I love it, makes me grin from ear to ear... It's the most Who-sounding PJ have ever been - Pictures of Lily meets I Can See for Miles. Love it.

I'm just glad the album version doesn't remind me of Silent Lucidity like Ed's solo versions did. I also like the way the drums come out of nowhere.

I already have both versions in the playlist under the same album number, but I TOTALLY agree. I it is vastly better - overall rhythm, tempo of the acoustic guitar pattern, the nice e-bow guitar work that Ed sprinked in, AWESOME. I really had high hopes for the album version of this one - maybe some NAIS-esque light solo work from Mike, a little bassline from Jeff, and some creative, odd-time percussion (as opposed to normal drumming) with cymbal work from Matt (maybe something kinda Indifference-esque, imaging how Dave A. would have handled this track back in the day ;) )

The first few times I heard the album version I thought that the demo was way better, but after a few listens I like the album version.

I think if you give it some time the album version will grow on you.

The band probably knew some people wouldn't like the studio version so they released the demo as well.
