how do the older singles stack up against the fixer. My personal opinion is thats its undoubtedly different but you cant say that the other singles from no code through to self titled were standard pearl jam songs. Who you are, given to fly, nothing as it sems, i am mine and WWS are all very different and not you typical run of the mill singles! who you are and NaiS in particular weren't very radio or casual fan friendly!

thoughts? what would you have personally chosen instead of those singles if you had a choice?

which ones your fave?

i can't even remeber the old singles but starting w/ No code

No Code - I think Hail Hail would be have the obvious choice, or even smile. Who You are wasn't too bad though, it does have a friendly melody.

Yield - Given to Fly is a pretty good one, i think they got this right.

Binaural - Insignificance has the most oomph to it.......nothing as it seems was an odd choice.

Riot Act - I am Mine is a pretty solid choice IMO.......I may have went w/ LBC though

Avocado - WWS is the right song............If Unemployable would have had better vocals and melody during the verses, it would have been an awesome song. Instead it was just okay.

Can't really say how the Fixer stands up because we haven't heard the whole album.......but overall i think it is in the top three.

I think PJ have always done a pretty good job at chosing the right first single from each album:

    Alive.........................perfect introduction to PJ
Go...........................ideal song to link Ten and Vs
Spin The Black Circle.....punk energy from their most challenging album
Who You Are...............maybe Hail, Hail would have been better
Given To Fly................possibly the best track on Yield
Nothing As It Seems.......one of my all time favourite songs by any band
    I Am Mine...................just a beautiful song
World Wide Suicide ......a nice change to have a rock track after so many mellow first singles
The Fixer ..................obviously we haven't heard the rest but I think it's a strong song to lead off
    “Do not postpone happiness”
    (Jeff Tweedy, Sydney 2007)

“Put yer good money on the sunrise”
    (Tim Rogers)

agree as well. when i think about that list, it reminds me that listening to those singles by themselves gave no indication about what was coming on the album, which is what I feel about backspacer. there is no way to judge it yet. and I think overall, given what they're doing with Target, I think the fixer was the right choice. I also think Got Some is going to be great when listened to properly.

What's weird is that I always forget what Pearl Jam's singles even are. When you see a lot of other bands the crowd will go over the top for the singles and everyone is expecting those songs. With PJ Alive is the only one from this list that gets played every show.

That's odd, I noticed that as well. Though I think Given to Fly gets played just about every night, am I wrong?
Man, if I can hear every single one of those songs in my first concert in LA, I will consider myself very, very lucky! I don't care so much for Nothing as it Seems, but everyone else seem to like it, so it wouldn't bother me.
