Agreed, I think it's one of the best songs on Avocado as well. The last chorus build-up is especially awesome.

Lyrically, I would put this song up there with anything Ed has ever written. There's a lot of depth there to explore. Seems like every time I hear that song, there's another layer I get.

Love it. After three years still one of my favorites. This is why I like Boom, he is perfectly placed in this song.

Agreed. There's a very nice melody going on in there.

I have to say, I find the chorus a little too simple/cheesy for Pearl Jam. It doesn't help that I hate the production.

The music on the bridge, however, I love.

You'll have to explain what you mean by "simple."

Again, it could be party/mostly the production, but to me it sounds like a lite-FM 80s chorus. And I very rarely criticize PJ songs.

What do you mean, though? The music? The lyrics? The melody?

I'm not arguing with you. Just trying to get what you're saying.

The way Ed sings the chorus, and the vocal melody of it. I don't have a strong opinion of the lyrics, and I love the actual music. The chorus just sounds syrupy/cheesy to me.

But I have issues with the sound of S/T in general. It sounds like a dubbed cassette.

Interesting. I love the way Ed sings the chorus for a variety of reasons, the melody being one.

I also like how the lyrics from one line bleed into the next

"Please come down with the living/Let what is living love."

It's one of my favorite lines in the Pearl Jam catalogue ... basically, stop worrying about the afterlife and start valuing life. In pursuit of heaven, stop making life on Earth hell. The song is basically a treatise on how organized religion has been corrupted into something evil, and this line pretty much encapsulates that.

Anyway ... I could write a term paper on Marker. It's just so ... deep.

Nicely put man. I can certainly relate to feeling PJ songs like that, just not this particular one for me. :)

Didn't think too much of it at first, but I'm a huge fan now. The more I listen to it, the more I like it. Hope to hear it at one of the Chicago shows.

you see ... that's how you respond to someone that disagrees with your musical taste. none of this "You're stupid", "you're fucked in the head" and my least favorite "you're wrong" nonsense. People do have different tastes ... that's life.

As for Marker ... something about it always rebbed me the wrong way ... too bubble gummy, perhaps? Don't know ... I tried, I really did.

Marker in the Sand is definitley my favourite track on the album. I love everything about it.

One thing that I really like is how it changes pace between chorus & verse. I can't describe it very well, but the change seems abrupt and quick, but smooth at the same time. I wish that I could explain it better. I always have difficulty explaining qualities of music & sound.

I really like the lyrics a lot too.

    Awesome song.
